Inspiration is a gift that spontaneously comes and goes without reason. Some occasions one can be overwhelmed with creative ideas whilst others are a frustration of little to no drive. It is when we find a constant source of inspiration that fuels our imagination that we really excel. This may be in the form of an individual, a group, a place or sound, but whatever it is it will change the way we think and feel and guide us forward on a positive path.

As a young artist and designer utilizing the fields of paint, graphics, fashion and sound I aim to communicate the power of imagination and inspire my viewers to strive for the best in life. Growing up my art has been a tool of escapism. Drawing inspiration from a variety of artists and public figures I have learnt that not only can I use art to explore within myself but I can also explore the world around me. The person who has had the greatest influence on my work and vision is Michael Kenji “Mike” Shinoda, best known as a key member of American rock band Linkin Park. His artistry spans various disciplines within the fields of music, art and design. His innate sense of melody, beat and the spoken word has helped his band sell over 25 million albums worldwide with their popularity reaching to every corner of the earth. Coming from an ordinary suburban background he has realised his ambition of travelling the world entertaining millions of people through a variety of creative mediums.
Besides his awe-inspiring diversity, what makes Shinoda unique from other successful musicians is his humble attitude to his career. He recognises his unique position as a role model and has embraced the opportunity to give back to the industries that have brought him wealth and success. In 2004 Shinoda started the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College of Design to benefit future illustration and graphic design students, awarded based on financial need and merit.
Earlier this year Shinoda was invited back to the same college to give a speech at a graduation ceremony. When speaking of his time as a struggling musician trying to get a record deal he told the graduates, “If you remember only one thing I say today, remember this: your integrity is not for sale.” With more up and coming artists and designers than ever before flooding an industry that has a drought of jobs available, we are increasingly being encouraged to compromise our vision and imagination in order to secure work. I have discovered through following Shinoda’s career that self-belief and commitment is key to long-term success and compromising will only bring momentary highs.
Shinoda’s magnitude of artistic talents has crushed the idea of “jack of all trades, master of none” and shown that with self-belief multiple successes are possible. His dedication to the arts and ability to avoid the stereotypes and distractions of a rock star is an imperative example for aspiring musicians and artists. I have learnt from Mike Shinoda that whatever discipline you choose to exercise self-expression, belief in your own ability must be your foundation and uncompromised passion is the fuel for remarkable achievements.
