Hi everyone! This is the first ever World-Makers.com Blog entry. I am Alvin Carpio, Founder and Chief Executive of World-Makers.com. I started the project in July this year as part of Hackney Young People’s University (HYPU), a summer school in East London. The idea came up during a class I was attending called “HYPU Enterprise.” I had one of those eureka moments!
I have been involved in a number of projects before (more info about these will come soon) and after graduating from university (I did History and Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) I spent a lot of my time thinking about the next steps. I wanted to start something which would allow me to follow all my passions at once, something which could pay for itself and something which could inspire others to follow their passions too. That’s when the World-Makers.com idea came up.
In the upcoming months, I will be sharing with you the absolutely fascinating experiences that has been the beginning of World-Makers.com! Only 3 months into it – from initial idea to website with exclusive interviews and absorbing articles from contributors across the globe – I’m committed to making World-Makers.com the hub for everything inspirational on the web.
So here it is. My first blog entry. I’ve decided to share with you my personal library. Books have been highly influential in my life. Strangely my ‘love affair’ with books only started during my A-Levels/6th Form College (5 years ago). I used to hate reading and couldn’t see why people enjoyed reading: I’d rather watch television or buy CDs and listen to the latest hip hop albums. The first ‘adult’ book I read was “The Prince” by Niccolo Machiavelli, and since that book I’ve developed a hunger for more books, more knowledge and more inspiring words and entertainment. I love reading great material from various categories. In the future I hope to show how much a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity for life has inspired me too. All will be revealed in the World-Makers.com Blog.
In the future, I will be uploading my Top Books lists and more stories about specific books too with reviews. The list below can be sorted by category, book title or author. I’ve uploaded this list to show you what books have inspired me so that you too might get the chance to read some great stuff. For now, here it is for you to see: nearly 200 books which make up my personal library catalogue. (To make it clear, the books listed below have been purchased by me, lent to me, bought for me or even found by me. Whatever the case, they each have their own place on my two floor-to-ceiling book shelves.)
